My thoughts for this blog was to explain the mechanics of Forward Head Posture (FHP) and its effects on the body, ways to stretch, and a really well-designed t-shirt that I recommend to help correct posture that you can wear while at home. Oh and maybe while watching a bit of Netflix just kidding A LOT of Netlfix!

The way you are sitting can have a transformative impact on your day. It’s hard to imagine that we might be doing damage to our bodies by simply doing nothing. Posture in easy terms can be understood as the position in which you hold your body when standing or sitting.
What is a plumb line?
The plumb line is a spatial term that places the body or bodies in relationship to the ground below. In proper anatomical position the joints would line up with a straight plumb line to the floor. And why is it important? The average human head is an impressive 14lbs alone. Studies show that for every one inch our heads move forward they gain weight by 10lbs. due to gravitational forces. This means the muscles in your neck and upper back are trying to hold up over 34lbs!
Some common types of dysfunction to the neck and lower abdomen:
When spinal tissues are exposed to continued compression, they deform and go through a transformation that can become permanent. Correction of Upper Crossed neck posture is key to stopping and reversing degenerative joint disease and pain from headaches, rib dysfunction, TMJ, and Dowager’s Humps (aka kyphosis).
I found this set of exercises online that I think is very well rounded in addressing the effects of FHP. As much as stretching the over-tight pecs and front neck flexors, it's also important to strengthen the overstretched rhomboids and serratus anterior.
Forward Head Posture affects nearly 20%-40% of adults and is one of the main issues I see in my clinic. It is no mystery as to why so many of us are affected by this. The use of computers, phones, and the amount of time we spend sitting all compounds to create a gross misalignment in our bodies which in turn effects us on an emotional level. I won't get into that now but remember that the body and emotion are one in the same.
Below is a product that I recommend often to clients battling poor posture. It was designed by a chiropractor and I was introduced to it when I worked at a chiropractors office many moons ago. I bought one for my partner who does landscaping and was constantly having to correct his posture on the job.
This shirt does that just by wearing it. It pulls back the pecs and essentially the whole shoulder girdle and helps to put slack into the overstretched rhomboids on the back body. It's a great product that I have seen work with my own eyes to help correct posture and gives your body a chance to realign. Wearing this shirt along with doing the stretches and exercises, I'm hoping you can find some more comfort and better posture to be the best you for yourself and others.
